On Saturday we walked to an old brewery, Pearl Brewery, that is nearby. It has been turned into restaurants and specialty shops. They had a farmers market on and we wandered through this in the hope of buying some fruit but didn't find anything. On the way back we checked out a local outdoor bar where we think we might have dinner.
Peter had found information about a local gun club, the oldest in Texas, that is in an area not far from downtown so we caught a taxi out there for him to shoot some targets. He had to borrow a gun (a right handed gun wasn't great for my left-handed shooter) and shot 5-stand with three other guys who were very friendly. He didn't shoot many but enjoyed seeing a different club and having a shot. The club rooms had a stuffed bear, a stuffed lion and many different deer heads - interesting!
After coming back from the gun club we had a swim in the hotel pool and enjoyed relaxing in the warmth. For dinner we headed back along the river to The Luxury that I mentioned earlier - it is made up of 2 shipping containers on a plot of land. It had tables and chairs and camo nets draped over the top. You get food from one container and grog from the other. They had a huge beer and wine list and some really good food. You are given a plastic dinosaur or other animal instead of a number when you order. We enjoyed our time there watching the crowds come and go.
On Sunday we decided to get a one-day pass for the water taxi and rode it into town. We did the whole loop through the restaurants and hotels, past the Convention Centre and up to Riverside Mall. The Alamo was too busy so we decided to walk out to the Mexican Market place where we wandered through the stalls and had lunch from one of the vendors while listening to a few singers. We caught the water taxi back to our hotel and rested from the heat before going back to have a Mexican dinner at Rio Rio where we sat upstairs and watched the passing parade. There were nowhere near as many people in town as Friday night.
Today we caught the water taxi back into town and went to The Alamo where we watched a film and learnt about the battle of the Alamo and the Mexican hold on a large number of States in the 1830's before they were given to the US. We also went to the Riverside Mall and wandered through the shops there before again retreating from the heat in the afternoon. Tonight will be our last night in San Antonio and for our US trip before we head for home!
