Today we went across to Taronga zoo, and even the journey there was amazing! We left circular quay early in the morning and as the ferry left the harbour behind, we passed right alongside the opera house and then out towards some of the nicest houses and apartments in the area that faced directly onto the waterfront. As we arced around to the left, we could see the top of the zoo coming into view and before long we were ready to spend the day with the animals.
The Giraffes have one of the best views in Sydney (yes we know they have an unfair advantage) as they look out across the water to the opera house and harbour bridge. We watched the Gorillas and the Chimps getting fed, and saw some amazing birds in their enclosure. Unfortunately for us, the Elephants were having a new enclosure built to give them more room and were off on holiday somewhere so we'll have to wait for our Kenyan safari to see the big eared ones for now!
The zoo is huge and there were plenty of kangaroos, sea lions, mountain goats, a red panda and even a Komodo dragon, which was about the size of a car, to keep us entertained throughout the day. It was good to see all the animals being looked after so well, and there was loads of educational information available so people could see just how much care is taken. The only problem we had while we were there was Jen getting run over and trampled upon by a group of Japanese school kids!! Although she was taller than most of them, so she did maintain some pride out of it!
The return ferry back to the quay gave us some more fantastic views (it really is one thing you never get tired of!) and once we were back on dry land we found a nice little pancake shop in the Rocks where we settled down for dinner.
