This leg from Finnistere to Lisbon was meant to have northerly winds and a current of 0.5 to 0.75 helping us on our way. We have had current against us, winds all over the place and fog almost every day. Today we had all of these. We left Peniche later than planned due to the unavailability of the harbour master to give pontoon keys back to and me acting as a translator between Dutch and French boats who wanted to unraft and neither spoke each other's language.
Initially we had bright sun and no wind! We then saw the most amazing thing, thousands of crabs swimming several miles out to sea. Not long after the fog came in and we were back to the radar, AIS, fog horn and getting damp. This lasted a couple of hours and we were back in sun. Next the wind got up to a force 6 on the nose and the sea went from a gentle swell mostly behind to short confused waves that really slowed progress. We endured this for 4 hours and just as we came to the headland we needed to turn 90 degrees around the wind reduced and also backed 90 degrees leaving it on the nose. Eventually by the time we reached Cascais it was almost zero.
The marina here is in a different league to anything else on this trip with room for super yachts and well laid out. We are staying two nights here and then going into Lisbon where Nicola will fly back to Africa. Hopefully her luggage will arrive with her this time!
