Paul, Esther and MB are up early to go to the Vis fish market. It is not open when it is supposed to be, so we find a fishing boat selling sardines which we buy for lunch. Back at the fish market we buy a 3 kilogram Gurnet, ( quiet ugly, and different from the Australian species). Esther gets instructions from the man at the fish market on how to bake it whole for dinner.
We cruise early to a group of Islands south east of Otok Vis. The sea is mirror calm so we decide to play with our toys, scurfing on the stand up board behind the tender, where the wake creates a nice little wave. Garnaut gets up immediately. Bernie has a little trouble but enjoys knee boarding as does Kath.
Next the 'airhead', (Donut). This is high speed cavorting behind the tender. JB has a big fall on a whip around and has sore ribs for a few days. Everyone except Alison who declines the donut, is exhilarated by all this, it is lots of laughs.
We then have a snorkel on what looks like an interesting reef. Paul is looking for crayfish. Alas, nothing unusual, lovely rocks, small fish, and clean water.
After lunch we cruise into 'Hvar'. We anchor just out of the small harbour that is so filled with big and small yachts and motor boats, it is hard to see how they can navigate in or out.
Hvar is reputed to be the biggest tourist destination after Dubrovnik. The town is surrounded by a 13th century wall where there are ornate gothic palaces, and traffic free marble streets. There is a great walk through elegant narrow streets up to the medieval castle, 'Spanjola', which overlooks the town and bay. We wander back through the town to meet Garnaut who is having his regular afternoon beer and pizza. On our way back to BP, we pass the biggest happy hour party we have ever seen.
Our baked Gurnet dinner is sensational. What we have learned this trip is that you can eat a lot of different fish species that look ugly but are delicious.
