On the morning of the 7th we headed off to see a little mining town of old called Walhalla. It was a great drive to get up to it on a winding road through the mountains. It was a shame that it was raining so hard. We arrived in Melbourne at another YHA just outside the centre of town and we caught up on email and had a quiet night in
On the 8th we headed off to the post office to post a collection of goodies home that we had gathered along the way (receipts take up a lot of room!) Then we had a lovely walk into town past the Victorian Market - lots of nice food for sale there. We wandered around the shops looking for more warm weather clothes as the weather in Melbourne was starting to give us a taste of what to expect in New Zealand. After a Japanese lunch which brought back so many memories we headed off the the Parliament buildings and had a tour. Our Aussie tour guide was great - she had us laughing a lot. The building was stunning inside and again very english they even copy the colours of chairs in the british parliament - red in one house and green in the other. We had a look at the Treasury and the gardens near parliament. We then headed down onto Collins Street - lots and lots of old buildings - St Pauls and St Michaels churches and many fancy shops Gucci and Chanel. Jacqui hasn't visited so many posh shops before on her holidays We headed over the river to Southgate and had a little walk along there - very similar to gas street basin in brum.
On the 9th we headed off to the State Library to see a Ned Kelly exhibition and see the amour he wore. The State Library itself is another beautiful building very old. We then headed off to Carlton gardens to see the exhibition hall dating back to the Victorian era. Jacqui was in for a treat then we went off to Melbourne Cricket Ground to watch an Aussie rules football match between a melbourne side and a sydney side. Besides the cold it was a good game quite close but melbourne lost! Then we met up with Indie another lady from our Northern Thailand trip and we headed off out for a nice thai dinner and drinks at the Spanish club. It was great to see Indie and meet her friends.
