Tulum is a tumbleweed sort of place but you come here for the beach and the ruins. We stayed in shacks off the nudist beach. Yes I did say nudist beach. I cannot say it was the best views. The naturalists tended to be large overweight men that should know better. There were a wide range of shapes and colours. It was all very strange and it took a lot of counselling and alcohol to get over the trauma. The shacks were awful. Small, hot, damp, dirty, full of insects and other creatures which ate my banana. There were shared bathrooms which consisted of outside cubicles with bamboo doors so people could see everything. I guess it was next to the nudist beach.
The beach itself was so beautiful and the sea was great. I spent several hours jumping waves and enjoying being in the warm water. In the evening, we chilled on leather loungers lit solely by a large fire and moonlight. We chatted, stargazed and drank beer. It was lovely. Electricity was only on from 6pm to 10pm at the hotel, so my head torch came in very handy for getting back to the shack. The group were very impressed and I could see just a hint of envy on some of those faces.
Tulum was a commercial centre for the Mayans and the ruins are perched on a cliff overlooking the crystal blue sea. They were beautiful. The site was also overrun with lizards and iguanas. It made the whole place a photographers dream. It was a lovely way to spend the morning.
