Tulum is a tumbleweed sort of place but you come here for the beach and the ruins. We stayed in shacks off the nudist beach. Yes I did say nudist beach. I cannot say it was the best views. The naturalists tended to be large overweight men that should know better. There were a wide range of shapes and colours. Playa del Carmen is a very commercial touristy spot and as shallow as this may sound it was a welcome relief to be back in civilisation We had 2 days here to do nothing but relax and recharge our batteries. Merida is a very busy town - not the prettiest but a good jumping off point for lots of sights. It is really hot here and thankfully we were able to get cabs to the hostel rather than the normal 30 minute walk with heavy bags. The hostel was great and we even had a small swimming pool. The journey to Palenque was indeed an experience. It took 5 hours along a windy road with zillions and I mean zillions of speed bumps. For those of us not feeling 100%, it wasn't the greatest experience. I was so cold as my body temperature just kept dropping.
