We passed through Guatamala City to pick up a chicken bus to Antigua. The tour does not stop here as it is considered too dangerous. From my view from the bus I would agree. Rio Dulce is at the end of a lake where it joins river Dulce. We didn't stay actually in Rio Dulce but a one of the places dotted along the waterfront. Flores is a beautiful little town on an island in Lago de Peten Itza. You have to cross over a 50m causeway from the mainland to get there. Our hostel was facing the lake and had great views especially of the amazing sunset. We were able to swim in the lake. It was so refreshing.
