Upon leaving Litchfield National Park with a few tears (having to say goodbye to Kerry, Terry, Pam and Darryl) we have decided to return to Darwin to continue to explore what the city has to offer.
In no particular order, we;
- Visited the local Aquascene attraction where at high tide, thousand of wild fish come up to shore to be hand feed. (Noting my luck with the fishing thus far, should have tried to grab a couple with my hands....although with my success to date, would probably have fallen in!)
- Went on a ferry ride across the bay/harbour to have lunch at the town of Mandaroh, which is really just a pub. In summary, pretty tough day, simply having a great lunch (best barra burger thus far) and a few beers overlooking Darwin from the other side of the harbour.
- Had dinner at the Stokes Wharf, where we ate out in the open, only centremetres from the edge of the wharf. (obviously no public liability in NT)
- Visited a few of the local markets (although to be honest, no positive feedback to report on them).
- Visited the museum, where there is an exhibit on cyclone Tracey, including a room which is pitch black and you get to hear a recording of noise that the cyclone made as it flatten the city.
- Had a few more dips in the resort pool, as well as dinner by the pool followed by some after dinner dips in the pool. (normal behaviour for winter in Darwin I've been told)
- Visited Darwin's artificial wave pool, as you would be crazy to swim in the real beach up here!
- Checked out the secretive 'sunset bar' (thanks to Lisa's local knowledge) where locals gather around and watch the sunset over the bay after a hard days work. (Obviously we didn't work, but the locals accepted us nevertheless).
- Had the best chinese ever! (I know its a big call, but happy to stand by it). For those heading to Darwin, the chinese restuarant at the casino is a must. Although not influencing my decision, the happy hour from 5 to 6 at the casino is also pretty good (schooners for $2!)
Also, during our stay we were lucky to be around during Darwin's Territory Day, the only day that fireworks are legally able to be brought, with the catch that they must also be let off on the same day. Talk about crazy, you would think they had never seen fireworks before. There were signs everywhere, and you could buy them at any shop, even chemist and BCF (now that's a shop/combination worth checking out......fireworks, lure, fireworks, lures....how to decide?))
To mark the day, we attended the main fireworks displays at Mindil Beach. The fireworks were spetacular, especially considering the back drop and the fact we were so close. Also, I have to admit I was a bit touched when the local people of Darwin also lit their personal fireworks off at the beach to say thanks to us for coming to visit.
Overall summary, great city, will be back !
