Next stop, Litchfield National Park.
Litchfield National Park is just a few hours easy drive south of Darwin, and is home to some amazing rock pools and waterfalls.
It is also where we needed to say goodbye to our travelling partners, Terry, Kerry, Darryl and Pam who needed to start their way back to the real world.
The main activities/attractions of Litchfield National Park are the waterfalls, and in particular being able to swim in the plunge pools at the bottom of the falls.
So, already changed into our swimming gear, we headed off to Florence Falls to take a look, but more importantly (from the boys perspective), to check out the plunge pool. Although the walk from the top of the falls to the bottom did contain over 100 odd steps, it wasn't a hard walk, and the pool at the bottom made the effort worthwhile. The water was crystal clear and refreshingly cool. You could also easily swim to the base of the falls, climb up a bit and dive back in. The only negative was that waters contained hundreds of massive fish, and we didn't think to bring the fishing lines!
After a while (and before our toes got too many wrickles), we decided to make our way out of the falls and skip over to Blueys Rockpools, for..............................another swim !
Blueys Rockpools are a series of smaller rockpools connected via rapids, which again were great to get in and have a swim.
Anyway.....after swimming for awhile, (and before any of the boys got swepted away), we then decided to head towards Wangi Falls for..................another swim. Wangi Falls were much bigger than Florence, both in size and popularity, although much the same in that you can swim over to the base of the falls and climb up (a bit) before diving back in.
Other notiable Litchfield events (other than swimming)
- Drove the 10 odd kilometres of rough 4WD dirt track to see the lost city. Although we saw some rock formations at the end of the track, all agreed that the city is still on the lost list. (that is, wouldn't do that again)
- Stopped at the Magnetic Termite Mounds, were it was confirmed our car must be made of plastic, as it didn't stick to them. (that is, have seen plenty of similiar mounds throughout NT)
- Had the mandatory campfire, although proud to say we stopped short of the sing-a-longs !
Of note on Litchfield v Kakadu. Upon entering the carpark to the falls/pool, it was immediately obvious that the park has been set up completely different to Kakadu, in that all attractions were easily accessible via short walks.
Overall experience.............would definitely return.
