After spending a few days in Kakadu, we decided to move back to civilization and travel the last few remaining kilometres towards Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory.
Darwin is an amazing place, and for a large city, very easy going. During our stay we caught up with Bec's cousin Lisa, who has lived at Darwin for over 18 years. Whilst there, she let us in a few secret watering holes, including a 'pub' at the back of what looks like a dry dock (i think it was just someone's well stocked fridge), as well as the local yacht club which is a get place to have dinner and watch the sun set.
Other activities during our stay
- Visit the Crocosaurus Cove, home of the largest crocodiles in capitivity including Burt, star of Crocodile Dundee, as well as the famous cage of death. The cage of death is where you 'pay' to get into a glass (perplex really) case and get lowered into freezing water where they stir up the crocodiles and try to make them attack you! We watched a few people have a go, and to be honest was not sure which was worst, the cold water or the croc attack. (Special note: Cooper was brave enough to have a go and get in, allbeit an old, not used anymore cage on dry land!)
- Also whilst at the Croc Cove, the boys got the chance to go 'Croc Fishing', as well as hold a few lizards and snakes a baby crocodile. And did you know, that the hotter the environment, the 'whiter' blue tongue lizards get, to a point that they are almost white in the Northern Territory.
- Visit the water park at Learnyear where we got to go on a few waterslides. Cooper rated the red slide as the best slide, as it was fast and pitch black. Hunter's favourite slide was the pool.
- Had a 'few' dips in the resort pool where we stayed, and the boys won (Bec did really) three baseball caps due to some sort of beer promotion. Funny thing, Cooper's hat already had his name on it, as the hat was a Cooper's Beer hat !
- Went to / checked out the Mindil Beach night markets, where the boys were able to purchase a crocodile tooth nakelace! (Obviously to replace the previously must have, but now outdated surfing attire. )
- Had dinner at the 'all you can eat' smorgasbord at the casino on Oyster Night. Lost count on the number of oysters Cooper had, although 40 would not be far off. And that was on top of the zillion scampies he consumed as well!
Next stop Litchfield National Park
