After a fanastic night at the Daly Waters Pub, we continued our journey towards Darwin with the next stop being Kakadu National Park, home of, amongst other things, the famous Yellow Water Billabong/Cruises.
On entering the park, we decided to head out and spend our first night at Gunlom falls. Although the drive into the falls was 'average' (and that is being kind) and the walk to the falls 'challenging' (being a steep climb up a rock face) the actual falls themselves were great as they were cool and relaxing and with possibly the best view you could have when swimming as the rock pools overlooked the entire world! (Which is a good thing, especially considering the effort and how hot and thirsty we were when we got there).
After spending the night in Gunlom by the campfire, we headed to Gagudju Resort, which is next to the Yellow Water Billabong and was the next big thing to mark off the things to do list.
Upon checking in, we booked ourselves into the next early morning/sunrise cruise, noting we were confidently informed that you would see the billabong at it most attractive at that time, and that getting up at 6.00am would not have any long term effect on one's health.
The wetlands were amazing, so peaceful and relaxing, but a bit hard to believe, as it is full of angry crocoduiles ready to attack at any time. Also from the road, everything looks so dry and dusty in the area and it is hard to believe there are massive volumes of water all around you.
It was during our cruise we got the chance to see our first live crocodile, up close and in their natural habitat.
Overall, the cruise was a worthwhile experience and definitely the highlight of our stay in Kakadu.
Other notable Kakadu adventures;
- Took a few dips in the resort pool (I know, a bit repetative, but it is hot up here!)
- Visited Jabiru, as it looked like a big town on the map (but was not so big in reality).
- Got eaten by the biggest mozzies ever seen, which came like clockwork as soon as the sun set
- Toured Ubirr, an area which has many aboriginal artworks.
- Broke one of the rear legs on the caravan as forgot to check all were up before leaving. No biggy, have another 3 legs !
PS. Did you know;
- that one third of Australia'a crocs reside in Kakadu ? Happy with that, no need to relocate! And
- Kakadu doesn't really have any water buffalo's, they were all removed (culled) in the early 2000's as they wrecked the place.
