Hi all, we made it......................back on the main road to Darwin. All I can say is 'what a travel'!
Once leaving Burketown, we decided to head directly west, as though the map indicated that the road was mainly dirt, it would save as a 'million' kilometres in getting to Darwin. But.................the moment that we stepped onto the dirt road, the road conditions seemed to get worse and worse the further we went. During the day it become obvious that we would not make it out the other side and that we would have break the distance into 2 days and camp out under the stars for at least 1 night.
So we found a 'safe' rest area near a creek acrossing which had crocodile warning signs everywhere. Lucky we decided to buy a shower/toilet caravan, would have been an interesting experience getting the boys to have a wash in the creek !
Anyway, after much bumps and dust, we came out the other side at Borroloola, (not the prettiest town in the world!) but having enjoyed our camping experience so much from the night before we decided to bunkerdown for another night of bush camping, somewhere further down the track, near Cape Crawford.
Next day, we completed the last few (hundred) kilometres to Daly Waters, home of the famous Daly Waters Pub, a must do/place to visit and have a few beers over dinner.
Some other tales of our experience
- To our horror, a quick calculation of our beers supplies concluded that we were in danger of running out prior to reaching Daly Waters. Options available were to either (1) reduce drinking levels or (2) buy a few reserves. Opting for option 2 resulted in us paying $65.00 for a case of XXXX, and that was after being forced to wait until 2.30pm and where we were breath tested and registered.
- Hunter got his holiday wish to sit inside the cab of a road train, although he didn't seem to fazed as when I asked him if he dreamt about the experience that night, he simply replied that he was too tried to dream as he fell asleep immediately ?
- The Daly Water's pub is famous for the tradition of women signing and leaving their bra's behind to hang on the roof, but Bec didn't carry on the tradition.
