Karajini National Park - Port Hedland - De Grey River
Sunny, 30 degrees.
Up early this morning as Ben had a long drive home and was going to work in the afternoon. Had some breakfast and he was on his way about 8am. We have spent a few weeks with him, and will not see him again for a few months now. It has been great to catch up with him and travel around together. We have all had a great time and seen a lot.
We left the campsite about 9.30am for the drive to Port Hedland. The journey out of the park was gorgeous, lots of hills and escarpments again. Just beautiful! Then it started to change quite dramatically, becoming very flat landscape. And road trains!!! OMG!!! There were so many!!! All with four trailers! All coming back from Port Hedland for more iron ore. The mining industry up here is still going very well! The trains also which are 2.5 km long all stacked up with iron ore are going all the time.
We pulled into Port Hedland about 1 pm. First went past the giant salt stack on the right. Then went to have a look at the port. Luckily there was a ship coming in with it's pilot boats guiding it. Port Hedland is obviously a very industrial town, and apart from the very busy port and salt works not much else is there, so we decided to keep going up the highway a bit more.
We then went to the supermarket for some supplies as we figured it will be a lot cheaper here to stock up a bit.
Back on the road about 4 pm for the journey to our free camp at De Grey River. Got there about 5pm and set up camp not far from the river. Very busy spot, lots of other vans everywhere but still plenty of places to choose from. Cooked some burgers for dinner and sat outside for a while.
