We awoke on valentines day with the room quite stuffy inspite of the fan in the room going at full steam. I headed through to the lobby and had the usual breakfast whilst I let Laura sleep in as she was out for the count!! I did a little bit of pointless web searching and researched Cambodia in terms of things to see and possible accommodation options in Phnom Penh. Laura slept on through to about 09:45 and she also had some breakfast ...rarity! We then basically sat idly chatting and before you knew it was gone midday, it was exceptionally hot and had hit the 35 degree Celsius mark which made it pretty unbearable when combined with the humidity. I went off to find some lunch and found a little local thai restaurant with no English menu. I pointed to the noodle soup with no real idea what was in it but we had learnt in these places you sometimes unearth a little gem. It was a pork noodle soup with various bits of pork with some parts looking pretty unappetising but it was delicious so I wasn't complaining.
I headed back to Laura who had left me some lovely valentines messages via email which was very sweet of her... one had a tuk tuk on and was very apt to our travels. We then curled up and spent the afternoon watching movies. Earlier in the morning a group of australian students who were checking out had noticed that one of their rental scooters had gone missing probably stolen! They were questioning themselves and they had to actually replace the bike or pay 50,000 baht to the owner. To put it into context that is over £1000!! They decided to buy a new bike as it worked out slightly cheaper at around £920. We did find it a bit strange that a tourists' bike went missing on the night they were due to return it in front of a hostel. You may or may not know but motorbike/moped scams in Thailand have gained a infamous reputation especially when it comes to ripping off unsuspecting backpackers. I had heard of one where the rental owner will loan you a bike and either you'll disclose where you are staying or someone they know will follow you and see where you park the bike. They will have a spare set of keys and just take the bike which you then presume must of been stolen and you have to pay for a replacement because the insurance means next to nothing. In addition the police do not seem to take much interest in your dilemma. Me and Laura both felt this may of happened and they did part with a lot of money and the circumstances just did not seem right. They seemed a close knit group of friends and split the cost but you can soon see how a budget traveller especially alone can lose a lot of money and basically ruin their trip. I guess this is a risk you take when renting such things as mopeds!
Lucky we we were not involved in that incident and we just watched movies in the cool confines of the hostel. Later that evening we headed back to our favourite little eatery in the fresh market of Phuket for a Valentines day meal and gorged on four different dishes which got laughs from the staff and was washed down with a couple of Changs. The reputation must of caught on because there were a lot of westerners eating there now and Laura felt it was because such a gorgeous couple were sitting in there haha... how modest. After feeling very stuffed we ambled back to the hostel and chilled out listening to the radio to rest up for our final day in Phuket... Happy Valentines Day
