Today we woke up really early at six thirty ish... Must have had a very rested night. We laid in bed reading and chatting before venturing out about seven am. We packed up our bags as we were going to move to the dorm today (our room was booked) then headed downstairs for breakfast. On route we met Kai the owner who told us we could stay in our room ...yippee! We sat in the front watching the early morning traffic and had some breakfast, Steven went for four rounds of marmite on toast and I had a couple of bananas. We then planned our day... A little.
We decided to do a walking tour of old Phuket with its old Portuguese buildings and chic little shops. It was hot today and getting hotter by the second so we took it slow. The walk was lovely and we enjoyed wandering around and taking in the vibe. The town is quite quaint and not many tourists around as I think they all head out to Patong etc. we found a cute little tea house with cupcake stands and tea cups but left as it was stupidly pricey. After the walk we headed back to the hotel for a refresh before venturing out again... Steven wasn't coping well with the heat which was becoming more intense. We are aiming to head to monkey hill but our route took us through quite a rough looking area. We looked at each other and gave that 'let's just head back' feeling. We think it proved the right decision as in 35 degrees heat only mad dogs and Englishmen would go for a stroll. We spent the rest of the afternoon discussing plans for the week ahead and having to gradually move chairs further back into the hostel as the sunlight was stalking us continuously. We both had cold showers which you do get used to and actually feel amazing once you get over the initial shock of the cold water. Around us the men were working erecting new dorms with walls made of plywood or something, I guess it's cheap.
At about 6pm we decided to head out and get some food and by this time it was a lot cooler. We wandered back down to the food market in the south of town to get purchase some cheap, local food. To our frustration the food was really expensive and Laura got quite flustered. We were convinced you get given a tourists menu which is trebled in price. I remembered a cheap place we passed on the first day which I thought was worth a shot. Getting to the place proved difficult the night food market surrounded our target but people were everywhere. There were stalls selling every kind of food imaginable, from duck to red snapper to freshly looking slaughtered pigs thrown on the tables (would turn you vegetarian very easily seeing that)... One even kicked Laura as the guy ran past holding it. After negotiating through the masses we found our eatery and ordered a rice, noodle and pad thai dish accompanied with a very cheap beer! The food was delicious and we both agreed on returning tomorrow, the cheap beer was the deciding factor. By this point we both felt tired so we retreated back to the hostel for more reading and relaxing. I tried to get the DVD player to work but proved fruitless! We relaxed ready for our day at the beach tomorrow.
