Horvats USA 2017
We didn't have so much beach driving to do today, so were able to set off later as the tides weren't so important. Today we did our own tour of the "lakes"...Lake Boomanjin, Lake Birrabeen and the popular Lake Mackenzie. Lake Boomanjin is the world's largest "perched" lake, which meNs it is "perched" on top of a sand dune and is fed only by rain water. In fact all three lakes we visited today are perch lakes. Lake Boomanjin is supposed to be quite densly populated with turtles but none were being cooperat5cooperative today. Water was quite warm, but the brown coloured water from tanins didn't make it so attractive to swim in. Next up was lake Birrabeen which was every bit as good as the more popular Lake Mackenzie - blue fresh water, white silica sand, and nowhere near as many people. We had lunch here, and the kids spent time catching tiny fish with their hands. A "comfort stop" at Central Station was next on the agenda. Fraser Island used to have a substantial logging industry which continued up to the 1950's, and this was the hub of activity. In it's heyday it contained tool and machinery sheds, stores, mechanics, a school and houses. Now all thst's left is a rusted diesel pump and some rusted machinery. Finally on to Lake Mackenzie. Not too busy, but a long walk to the lake - 13 years ago we parked practically on the lake shore. The boys got the kayaks out, Xander tried his hand at a long distance swim ( did pretty well too!), and another Dingo sighting at close range. There's only Telstra mobile reception on most of the island, which is useless if you're with Optus. So no photos today, as I gave up carrying my phone around!
