This is Norway calling - We arrived in the land of the midnight sun at midnight yesterday (this was unexpected, as I'd somehow manged to mis-read the arrival time for the ferry, we thought we were getting in at 3pm)and undertook a hairy drive through the alley ways and avenues of Bergen to land at a campsite somewhere eastish from where we started at about one in the morning.
We awoke this morning to some fairly freakish weather, zero degrees (not to mention the windchill) and snowing. I still maintain that it should be warmer than this in Norway in the middle of April and fully expect to be back in shorts by the end of the week. Undaunted (which is surprising) M is now insisting that we plough on North !!!into the hinterland to see fjiords similar to those we could see if we drove South. However, who I am I to argue.
A swift visit was undertaken to Bergen town (city...whatever) this afternoon. Thepeople seem friendly and are clearly immune to the cold (we stood out from the crowd in "headies" and earmuffs...see the latest pictures) not one of the Norwegianswas wearing a hat or gloves. Theydo smile a lot these people and it has to be said, many bear a remarkable similarity toHobbits - so headgear aside I'm confident we'll fit in.
On Friday we spent the full day in the city after riding in on the scooter without falling off and did the tourist highlights - funicular to top of mountain and forest walk, fishmarket and wandering through pretty streets of wooden buildings. It's a very attractive city, colourful and very peaceful for a major city, if a little on the expensive side. We do have some photos and will upload them as soon as the annoying technical glitches on the website have sorted themselves out!
