So we'd left you in Flam and from there we travelled North(!) to Fjaerdland and glacier territory, i.e. even colder! It was beautiful, in a lonely, desolate sort of way and when the cloud cleared enough the views were fantastic. But to be honest the season doesn't really start there until June and everything was closed. We couldn't really see the attraction for people living there as they must just spend 8 months of the year snow bound, but maybe there is some great under ground life going on that we didn't see. Anyway, the glaciers we visited - fortunately the road had just been cleared - were spectacular. They are distinctly blue in parts though that didn't come out all that well in the photos so you'll have ti use your imagination.
From Fjaerland we planned another couple of days in the fjords a little further south but after we got the van stuck trying to park it on the next campsite and Gordon nearly got me covered in mud trying to extricate it - why did he think I'd be able to push our 3tonne van? - we decided enough was enough and headed for Oslo.
The journey there was quite an adventure as we had to travel over mountains and roads where the snow had been cleared to form 12 ft high walls on each side. And as things were starting to thaw by this time, every so often there were little piles of snow in the road where they had partly collapsed. In places you could just see the roofs of houses poking out - we assumed they were holiday homes but maybe Norwegians can just hibernate? Well it was a bit nerve-racking but as we did pass occasional trucks it must be normal for them!
When we finally got to Oslo there was sun - hurrah!. Oslo is a nice city and we had a good wander for a day, and I'm sure it would be a lovely place to live. We got ourselves a bit of culture while we were there visiting an exhibition of Munch paintings which were OK but also the Vigeland sculpture park which was fantastic. This has about 250 of Gustav Vigeland's sculptures of people in all different forms and poses in an outdoor park and was really the highlight of Oslo for me.
The next day we moved on to SwedenÂ
