We headed off early this morning on the coach to the Vietnamese war tunnels. These were tunnels the north Vietnamese dug during the war to hide from and attack the Americans and South Vietnamese. We were very lucky as our tour guide translated for the Americans during the war, so we got good insider knowledge. First we saw the entrance to a replica of one of the original tunnel and someone showed us how they entered and left the tunnel. The entrance was around 50cm by about 20cm and we were asked if anyone wanted to have a go. The new guy on the group (who was also the largest) decided to have a go and managed to get down to his chest before he almost got stuck and gave up.
We then saw some booby trap techniques they used and were told many stories about the war. We finally headed to the tunnels made especially for tourists (which were twice the size of the originals) and got to crawl round them which was a tight squeeze, maybe I need to stop eating so many curries.
After getting back to the hotel we headed back to the local bar and met up with Sean and Sue again. We headed out to get some food from another restaurant and got a tasty pancake with chicken and prawns mmmm. The beers here were also even cheaper around 30p. We then headed to see the Notredame Cathedral, Post Office, Opera House and Town Hall, before going to downtown (the expensive district) for a final drink with Sean and Sue before they dropped us off at the hotel to get freshened up before catching the night train to NHA Trang.
As I'm typing this we are now on the sleeper train in the lovely first class cabin with a TV, free water and clean sheets. I might have to have a walk in a minute and check out the second class, third class and lower which I have heard dark stuff about. Maybe when we book our own train we should go for 1st class too.
Thanks Uncle Sean and Sue for showing us round and everything while we visited your hometown, it's a lovely place, especially bar 333.
