Low Head had a lovely beach, but it was very windy, and this morning dawned cold and grey. The smoke had set in again. So we set off and had a look at the maritime museum and the light house. Had another scallop pie for lunch at the light house café.
Now it was decision time. Do we spend another night in Launceston? Or do we head down and check out a few towns south of there? Saturday night would have to be in Devonport, ready to get on the boat early in the morning. But tonight? We really had no idea.
We travelled south, and got caught in a traffic jam in Launceston. There was road works on one of the two roads that crossed the river. We got caught in one, frantically looked up the map and realized there was an alternate route, and headed there. However everyone else had the same idea, so this road really wasn't travelling any faster. By the time we had got through the worst, we gave up all idea of spending more time in Launceston. If we never see it again it will be too soon.
We headed to another historical town called Evandale. It certainly had old buildings and antique shops, but it took itself very seriously and was way over priced. The best thing in town was a few free-range chickens wandering through the streets. There was a free-camp here, but there was not much to do and it was still early. So we thought we would check out the other small towns, and perhaps come back later.
Next stop was Perth. We had driven through here as the highway goes right through it. We stopped to check it out, and discovered it consisted of about three shops. Moved on.
The last town we wanted to check out was called Longford. It was bigger, but more of a service town. Not very exciting. It had a caravan park, but no free camping.
All these towns were within about ten to fifteen kms of each other. But now we had had a look at all of them and weren't really keen to spend more time in any one of them. So we thought, why not push on to Deloraine? Sure we've been there before, but we liked it and didn't mind spending more time there again. It was also a good fifty kms further along, but that would be fifty kms less we would have to drive tomorrow. And we knew there was a free camp site, and a very nice one at that.
So the decision was made and we pushed on. It was a long day with a bit more driving, and more difficult driving, than we had been expecting. But we settled down to happy hour with another couple in town, and ate cheese and biscuits all evening until we were too full to have any dinner. Early night tonight.
