While we were in Ross we hatched the idea of getting a fridge magnet for each male member of our small group. Ross was easy, and Bernie quite straight forward (although the spelling was different.) We had plans to go to George Town on the Tamar Valley later, so George was covered. That left only Ray - and try as we might, we could not find a town in Tassie called Ray. Eventually we decided the closest we could get was Railton, the town of topiary, we had seen previously.
So we headed there on the way to Launceston, and got there about 9 am. Problem was the only shop in town opened at 10 am. So we stopped and had a coffee, and bought some fresh bread from the bakery. Next stop was the barbeque in the park, and we had a wonderful egg and bacon breakfast.
Picked up the fridge magnet and headed back to the highway. On our way was a town called Deloraine. We had seen the sign for the turnoff several times, but had not been there. We had been advised that they do really good ice cream, so decided to check it out on our way.
So we stopped at the Info Centre, and there they had a display called Yarns - four huge, beautiful patchwork quilts, worked on silk, depicting the region's history, varying landscapes, and flora and fauna. They had been made by the local community - the initial design was broken up into smaller sections, each worked by a different group, then assembled together. They were absolutely amazing. I was blown away.
We then walked through the rest of the town and found it scattered with art and craft shops and galleries. There were some amazing things, made by local artists, who were there in the shops, so you could meet them and speak to them. Even George was impressed, and we bought a few small prints. I also found a wool shop and got some supplies, and many great ideas, for my felting.
We discovered a free campsite by the river just out of town. We both loved this place so much, decided to stay the night and go to Launie tomorrow. We did ask about the ice cream, but no one in town had any idea. They suggested a town called Chudleigh, about 10 kms away. Couldn't be bothered.
