Test Run
Our last full day of travel in the north of Iceland so of course we first went to a waterfall. Godafoss is the waterfall of the gods where the leader of the region threw his pagan gods into the water on conversion to Christianity. From here we wound around several more fjords & visited an historic turf covered farm & vicarage which has been made into a museum. The original rooms with dirt walls, floor & turf ceilings are still in place from the 1840's. After reading the novel Burial Rites recently this was excellent to have a glimpse of how the life would have been to live in a dark, cold, dirty place like this. A poor farmhouse would have been even more sparse & crowded. Lunch stop in Akureyri, the second biggest town in Iceland with 17,693 so small & quite pretty beside a fjord. Visited another turf farm museum in the afternoon & a friendly staff member explained some of the building process to us. The various rooms lead off a central passageway with the badstofa, living & sleeping room, at the end with tiny windows. Spinning & knitting were important for creating clothing so Eve & I would have felt at home - cold though!
