Test Run
Set off heading east into the countryside & I can honestly say I've never seen so much natural beauty in any place we've ever been. There's a change of landscape virtually around every corner & each one is such a surprise & delight that it's hard to keep the smile off your face! Had to stop & build a cairn at the lakeside where hundreds of others had done the same. I compiled a little Innukshuk as I've done since discovering them in Canada & loving the idea that they provide "safe passage through life's journey". Being a fan of rocks & stones the next surprise was an amazing one. Right beside the highway is the gully where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is in full view. This is the place where the North American & European continental plates once met but now move apart at 2.5cm per year & it's the only place in the world where this is above ground!!!!!!!! Had a lunch stop at the original Geysir which gave the word to all others & watched Strokkur erupt every 5 minutes or so - very impressive. Being a fan of waterfalls, this was Geoff's day & our next stop was just awesome in the real meaning of the word! At Gulfoss waterfall there are several layers of hugely powerful falls coming from a glacier & we were able to walk very close to see & hear the amazing amount of water - spectacular. Driving south towards Vik we happened upon several other waterfalls coming off the mountainside from the Eyjafjallajokull glacier which was the one that erupted in 2010 stopping international air traffic. We also saw the farm at it's base which featured in some amazing photos at the time & is one of the reasons we have come to Iceland.
