Gunlom – Leaving Edith Falls we headed into Kakadu, hitting our first red dirt and corrugations and arriving at Gunlom at lunchtime. It wasn’t a pleasant arrival at all. It was very hot and the wind was howling across the campground, blowing huge clouds of dirt and ash from a recent fire, across everyone and everything. We set up with our ‘backs to the wind’, had a quick lunch and went in search of someplace better. And that, we certainly found. As with most of the amazing places in this part of the country, you have to deal with a little ‘harsh’ to be rewarded with something beautiful, an oasis. We left the windy, dry, dusty campground, walked along a short, ‘rainforesty’ type path into a stunning waterhole at the base of a huge rock wall. It was so refreshing. We wasted no time jumping in the water and swimming across to the base of the waterfall. As there was no better place to go, we spent the afternoon swimming and reading in the shade of the trees. Once it was cooler, Ben and the two oldest boys walked up to the top pools at the top of the waterfall to the ‘Horizon’ pool. The view was exceptional and they loved it. It certainly made for some awesome photos.
