Thursday morning we packed up and drove into the Wilpena pound resort to do a walk up to the top of the pound. The walk for the most part was easy and gently sloped up through Sliding Rock gorge, the only way into the pound. At the bottom of the steep part of the walk was an old homestead and information telling of the early settlers who farmed inside the pound. It was extremely interesting and again blew our minds at the incredibly hard work and conditions that the settlers endured to make a living. After the steep walk to the top we were indeed all left breathless! It was an awesome view into the pound! An amazing natural wonder!
After walking back and having a spot of lunch we drove on to free-camp the night in Parachilna Gorge by the dry river. We have decided that the term free camping has in fact a few meanings; 1- free because it costs nothing, 2- free because it's free of electricity and 3- free because we feel free. The boys especially enjoy the latter, pretending to be mountain goats climbing the gorge walls, running wild and then sitting around the fire toasting marshmallows
