So today started early with a pre-breakfast drive to Blacktail Pond where we saw the sunrise and got some amazing views of Grand Teton. We were also lucky enough to see a coyote, lots of lovey little ground squirrels and lots of different birds. From here we drive to the Antelope Flats to see the Moulton Barns. The barns are the last remaining barns of John and Thomas Alma who were the original Mormon settlers to the area. Here we saw loads of swallows nesting, mountain bluebirds, more ground squirrels, pronghorns and bison. After looking at the barns which formed part of the Mormon Row we looked at more of the barns and then drove back towards our hotel, stopping on the way for see Northern harriers, more pronghorn and a number of different birds.
When we got back to the hotel we had some breakfast before jumping back in the minibus and went to Moose Junction. From here we walked along the path looking for moose, beaver, bear, any type of mammal. Unfortunately we didn't see any except for a little chipmunk and a red squirrel. We also saw a number of different birds and raptors including a blue thighed heron, lapwing and a red tailed hawk nesting and feeding its chick. After our walk we drove to the Craig Thomas visitor centre where we had our lunch and a look around. The centre had lots of information about the animals in the park, how mountaineering has impacted the park and also traditional American Indian Artwork and clothing.
After lunch we drove to Dornans on the hunt for hummingbirds. We were expecting to see a hummingbird feeding station but that had gone but despite this we saw and heard 2 broadtailed hummingbirds. We also walked down to the river but due to the melt water the rivers are so high and so some of the animals we would usually be able to see around the water have been disturbed.
After our trip to Dornans and admiring the amazing views we came back to our hotel and then I wandered in to town to explore Jackson further.
Jackson really reminded me of a western and what I would imagine a traditional cowboy town! There are lots of wildlife photography and art centres and outdoor shops so I was pretty much in my element.
After exploring Jackson and visiting the town square I walked back to my room to pack my bag ready for our departure to Yellowstone tomorrow.
After I had manage to squash my suitcase shut we met by the minibus and drove back to Dornan's for a pizza 'Tuesday' dinner, the only difference was that this time we were driving through a storm and the Tetons were covered in black cloud. So we ordered our pizza and sat outside in the covered walkway with a view of the Tetons only to discover there was a complete power outage! Thankfully we got our order in just in time and so they were able to cool our pizza, although anyone wanting pizza after us was sent away! So we ate our pizza and then we got back in the bus and drove Schwabacher to admire the view and also see the sun disappear behind the mountains. Just as we were leaving we saw a calliope hummingbird in the tree which is the smallest hummingbird in Teton and so very pretty.
From here we drove back to Moose and walked along the river and spotted elk, cranes, beavers, Nighthawk and many bats. So feeling that we had fully achieved we returned back to our hotel watching the storm through the window and headed to bed ready for our trip to Yellowstone tomorrow.
