Today started with an early breakfast so we could head off on our bear hunt. So after breakfast we hopped in the minibus and drove out to the Grand Teton National Park entrance. On the way we stopped to look at a Bison and admire the view of Grand Teton, Middle Teton and the Teton Glacier. Here we also saw lots of very lovely ground squirrels running around.
After admiring the view and taking many photos (I might even have more photos of Grand Teton than I do of the Sydney Opera House soon!) we continued our journey to the National Park and our hunt for bears.
Unfortunately we didn't see any bears but we did see a coyote run in front of the bus and we also saw many birds including a white pelican, American Kestrels, osprey and Swainsons hawk.
Enroute to hunt for more bears we stopped off at the visitor centre in Colter Bay where we found out about American Indians as well as making my first holiday purchase! From here we drove to Two Oceans Lake where we walked along the river and saw a red-napped sapsucker and a red squirrel, but still no bears. We also met many hungry mosquitos!
After our walk we had a picnic lunch and then drove back down the dusty track to the
Jackson Lake Lodge which had the most spectacular views of Jackson Lake and Grand Teton. While we were at the lodge I explored the different shops and had my first American ice cream which although it was only one scoop it was equivalent to a two or maybe three scoop at home! While eating my ice cream we were admiring the scenery when we saw a broad tail hummingbird diving and hovering, which was totally amazing as I have never seen a hummingbird before. We also saw a number of different raptors and I took even more photos of Grand Teton.
From here we drove back to Jackson and saw some pronghorn, elk and bison on our journey. When we got back to our hotel we had a little rest before heading back out for some dinner. We met for dinner and went to a BBQ restaurant and again realised just how different the portion size is! After dinner we went through all the places we have visited and all the animals we have seen so far. Then it was an early night ready for the super early rise in the morning.
