Semana Santa was certainly an amazing time to come visit San Cristobal. An already progressive and culture filed town is embellished with artists from around the world colouring the streets with chalk, live traditional music on the streets and main square, colourful statues representing different aspects of revolution in San Cristobal, specialist food markets and more. The town has such an inspiring atmosphere of hustle, bustle and fiesta.
Watching one live music band on a temporary stage just off the main square we were welcomed by the locals. We must have stuck out like a sore thumb because a guy on stage called out to ask us where we were from and invite us to try some free tortillas and beans and see the women weaving their garments next to the stage. I bought a lovely hand woven purse which will forever remind me of this magical town.
Though the street market food was delicious, my favourite meal here has to be from the quirky little 'Funky Burritos' restaurant which was tucked innocently down one if the side streets.
That evening, in a vain attempt to save money, we decided to gamble on red wine from a carton which unsurprisingly turned out to be thoroughly undrinkable, even for cheapskates like us. Wine replaced with beers, a group of us all headed to a live gig by a famous Mexican singer who had the most gorgeous deep lullaby voice. Again, a great atmosphere and I met a couple of fellow Cuba enthusiasts who might be headed there at a similar time to me. I also bumped into the reggae guy from open mic night and a group of us all went to a salsa club to finish off the evening.
