Where Guatemala was similar to Mexico, Belize is drastically different. Once a British colony, their predominant language is English and they still have the queen on all of their bank notes. Everyone here is Rastafarian with a strong accent and an attitude to match. Stopping over for lunch we grabbed some local recommended sea conch from a street vendor who repeatedly referred to me as her baby. Once in Caye Caulker we checked in to 'Dirty McNasty's Hostel' which is everything it says on the tin, i.e. grimy looking bed sheets and a sparsely decorated bar/kitchen area to match, embellished only with a pool table and a book exchange shelf with a lonesome looking three books. Even so, the atmosphere and hostellers are cheery and fun and the free rum punch available every evening definitely gets everyone chatting. The next morning we booked to go on a snorkelling tour around the islands marine reserves. An amazing insight into the underworld of the sea; snorkelling amongst brain coral and parrot fishes, seeing nurse sharks, and swimming just feet away from giant sting rays. It really made me wish I'd had an underwater camera. Although a day with my head in the water did result in a decent sun burn, the trip was well worth the sacrifice.
