For Easter Sunday itself we made our way to Merida and explored the city, also filled with festive cheer, music and performances. Katie bought some great hand made leather flip flops and we both purchased a few souvenirs from local stalls. Tired from another long bus ride we stopped for an iced coffee and admired the festivities. Reminded of Easter at home we also went in search of chocolate Easter eggs but finding none we had to settle for Kinder eggs and had a little treasure hunt in our hostel.
We visited the home of the former owner of Merida which is now transformed into a bank, but tourists can still wander the beautiful gardens. Every morning and evening a grand procession with suited men playing drums and trumpets put up/take down the giant Mexican flag that centres the main square. It was great and also served as a heady wake up call the next morning; with our hostels amazing location we were able to watch it all over again from our window.
For dinner we treated ourselves to the lonely planet recommended 'Chaya Maya' restaurant. It's super traditional with waitresses dressed in flower embroided shirts and even a woman perched in the corner of the restaurant making dough and fresh tacos.
After dinner the Chaya Maya pub on the next street was a nice place to enjoy yet more live music. We didn't stay long however as we were both exhausted and preparing to move on to Isla Mujeres the next day.
