Train from Vienna in the morning which got us to Salzburg by 11. Left our bags at the hotel and then went into Salzburg for the afternoon. Visited Mirabel gardens (used in the Sound of Music!), Mozart's birthplace museum and the Hohensalzburg fortress where we got some really good views of the city. Went up on a funicular railway too!
Evening dined at an Austrian restaurant - new drink tried Ramazotti liqueur which was recommended! Plus local wine! And ice cream 'Hiebe liebe'!
Day 2 - Music and Mountains!
Started the day bright and early with a trip to Mt.Untersberg where we took a cable car most of the way to the top, then climbed the rest of the mountain as they did in the film! May have accidentally worn flat shoes - oops! Really pretty from the top, even stopped and had tea with a view!
On the way back down made some Spanish friends - mostly hand signals as didn't speak much English!
Next had a brief visit to Mozart's residence museum before heading off on our all singing and dancing Sound of Music bus tour! Visited the locations used in the film, found out some secrets and did lots of singing in the bus! Even yodelled down the microphone! Stopped at Mondsee - a really nice town in the mountains by a lake where the wedding scene was filmed - and ended at Mirabel gardens again with a spot of Do Re Mi!
Dined at another Austrian restaurant before a 'Sound of Salzburg' show where we were youngest by about 30 years but made friends with a Canadian tour group! More singing along and education in Mozart, operetta, Austrian folk music and of course 'Sound of Music'. Also learnt a lot about Canada - next trip!
On to Switzerland tomorrow!
