Malmo to Berlin - 3 trains today! Early start in Malmo followed by an entertaining trip from Copenhagen to Berlin. Firstly the train went on a ferry (!) across from Denmark to Germany - we all had to get out and go on deck! Weren't expecting that - thought we had done all our boat travelling! Pretty view though. Then the next part of the journey we were entertained by a very loud American lady who was talking to us about everything from travelling the world, to films, to the Olympics to gun crime! She nearly had an argument with a man who complained that he wanted to be quiet (as we were actually in the quiet zone!) Quote 'what do you want to do - pray?'! 'We're not in the days of the Berlin Wall!' Hehe, made the journey go quickly!
Had a brief stop in Hamburg (very hot!) and then on to Berlin. Arrived to plus 30 degree heat but hotel easy to find luckily - got free waffles at check in!
Spent the rest of the afternoon and evening seeing some of the sights - Brandenburg Gate, Tiergarten park, Reichstag building, and Holocaust memorial. Had dinner of chicken 'Berlin style' accompanied by cocktails and more Aquavit!
Berlin day 2 -
Spent the morning walking round some more of the sights - lots of pretty buildings. Saw the Berlin cathedral and went up the Dome tower (lots of steps again!) to get some good views. Very hot again today!
Afternoon we did a bus tour with another entertaining character - our German guide had very strong opinions on the EU and politics but liked us as we looked interested in her tour! We just smiled and nodded - couldn't get a word in edgeways!
After that got a bit lost and then ended up in a museum (not the one we had planned) - at least it was cool!
Dinner we had at a nice restaurant where we didn't have much choice in trying our first German beer which was surprisingly nice! Heather also had Wienerschnitzel which was huge! The waiter was very good persuasive and good at selling, and wouldn't let us have the same thing!
Also made friends with some Canadians who thought we were too young to be drinking beer and couldn't believe we were 30! They were really nice though and one man in particular was quite amusing - especially after some drinks!
A packed few days but really enjoyed Berlin!
