Day 15 03/06/2013 Lake Argyle Tourist Resort.
It gets light very early in this part of WA....... and being adjusted to NT time, we were awake at 5am, thinking it was 6.30am! It was a beautiful dawn......after a very warm night. I mentioned that we ditched the fleecy PJs sometime ago.....now we have ditched the doona too, in favour of a sheet! We had a very lazy breakfast and watched a flock of red-tailed black cockatoos making a raucous noise in nearby trees. Then we had a swim in the pool, followed by a shower and a few chores. After that we went for a walk to look at the dam wall. Lake Argyle is the largest expanse of freshwater in Australia and holds enough water to fill Sydney Harbour 21 times over! It is a man-made lake formed when the Ord river was dammed in the early 70's. The level of water in the lake fluctuates depending on how much rain the wet season brings.
In the middle of the afternoon we set off on a cruise of the lake. We thoroughly enjoyed our three hours on the water. The scenery is spectacular. We saw a rock wallaby with a joey in her pouch; larger wallabies called Euros; freshwater crocodiles and catfish and archer fish. Also a whistling kite and its nest.
Just on sunset, (which occurs around 5pm), we anchored and had a swim in the lake.....champagne in hand! There were quite a few children on the cruise and they had a ball jumping off the boat into the water.....which was reasonably warm. Back to camp for dinner ( pre-prepared earlier in the day, so only needed heating up!), then writing this blog and more stargazing. We will have WiFi tomorrow to upload the blogs!
