Day 13 01/06/2013 Alice Springs to Dunmarra Roadhouse.
So........we drove over 800km today.....a little like traversing the UK from top to bottom.... although I doubt you could do that at an average speed of 100km/hr!!!
We used the Stuart Highway........ this road does deserve the highway tag, since it is sealed all the way from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north, a distance of some 3,000 km
Between Alice Springs and Katherine, where we will turn off to get to WA, there is only one major, (that's a relative term), town; Tennant Creek. We knew we would reach TC by the middle of the day; but it would be too much to get all the way to Katherine before dark. So, we camped at the Dunmarra roadhouse campground, about 320 km south of Katherine, along with several other travellers...some in large caravans; some in camper trailers like us, and others in tiny tents. It has been very hot today, and is still very warm as I type this at 7.30pm.
There were a few places along the way where the scenery was quite picturesque but with the exception of the special rock formations known as the Devils Marbles........large granite boulders said to be the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent in Aboriginal mythology............100km south of TC, where we stopped for an early lunch, the route was largely uninteresting.
