Punakaiki is a very small town on the coast which is renowed for its pancake rock formations and blow holes! There is a small information centre and cafe, then over the road is a short walk which takes you along the cliff edges to see the rock formations and views out over the ocean. The rocks resemble loads of pancakes on top of one another, hence the name, lol, due to pressure and erosion over millions of years. We also saw what I originally thought were lots of little penguins stood on a big rock but after taking pictures and zooming in further, I later discovered they werent birds, lol!! They sort of look like penguins though! We also saw a few dolphins jumping out of the water which was really cool, I tried to get some pictures of them but they were too fast! If you look at one of the pictures and get a magnifying glass you can see the fin of one, honest!
Its definately worth a stop here, luckily although it has been very cold at night and first thing in the morning, the sun is out all day with clear skies!
