The Weird & Wonderful Adventures of Emma, Len & Jo
Well we thought we'd actually tear ourselves away from sunbathing at the lagoon and actually do something active for today and so headed up the mountains to Kuranda. Its this little village where everybody seems to head for the markets they have everywhere so as you can imagaine Lennie and I were more than happy to spend the day there! As its over the mountain somewhere you have to either get the skyrail above the canopy of the rainforest or you can get the scenic train that goes up the mountain. So being the clever people we are (or should I say thanks to the tour we booked?! :D) we decided to get the skyrail there and the train back in the afternoon. Now if you've ever been to Alton Towers the skyrail is like the one that you can get into the park except this one takes about an hour to get to over the mountain and you can stop in the rainforest and at some waterfalls along the way (hence all the photos of Baron Falls from every possible angle! Sorry guys..I got a bit carried away there!). Going over the canopy of the rainforest in this little carriage thing was really cool and you got to see all the views over Cairns and Barron Gorge as well.
Kuranda itself is pretty small and other than the markets there isn't all that much to do there so after looking through the markets (and I will confess buying some more jewellry) we decided to go to the Bat Rescue Centre where this lady looks after all these Flying Foxes. They're allowed to come and go as they please and she looks after the little orphaned ones as well. When we got there all the bats were out sunbathing on the cages she had set up in the garden which apparently they love to do. Some of them even started to fight over their place in the sun! Now I know nothing whatsoever about bats but I thought they liked sleeping in the dark but I guess I was wrong about that one!
After the bats we went to find the Koala Gardens as we had read that you could cuddle them and have your photo taken with them which pretty much sold it to us straight off..I don't care what you say Megan..they might be vicious little b*****s but they're just so damn cute!! So anyway the gardens also have loads of crocs and lizards and we also got to feed some very very lazy kangas who wouldn't come to us for food so we had to go right up to them and they took the food from our hands which was pretty good. Also got to hold a koala for a few minutes each and have loads of photos taken...you could also get photos taken of you holding a big snake but it cost extra and we'd much rather have held the koala instead. The koalas all have differnt patterns on their bums which apparently are like our fingerprints...it kinda look like sheeps wool but a lot softer.
After the koalas we went around the markets again (just in case we hads missed anything the first time of course) and then headed to the station to get the train back to Cairns. The station was really cute and the train was like one of the old steam trains...really reminded me of the Bluebell railway at home...it has the wooden carriages and the pull down windows so everyone can stick their heads out the windows as your going along. The ride back was really pretty as you went over Barron Gorge again and past the waterfall. You then went down around the mountain and past another waterfall that the train track goes right next too. You also got really good views of the mountains and then Cairns as you come further down..so again loads of rubbish scenic photos with neither of us in them I'm afraid!!
Anyway back in Cairns now for our last final days...sob..not got anything else planned till Sunday when we finally leave and go down to Mission Beach then Townsville to meet Jo on Tuesday so we'll prob update again then..although you know how crap we are with this keeping in touch malarky!! Love you all. xxxx
