Day 131 (Tuesday 15th April 08)
Again this morning down for our massive buffet breakfast. Both feeling a bit ill afterwards, think our bodies aren't used to all the rich food anymore! Went to reception for 8am and checked out and as the guy from Travelpost had said to asked them for our bus number. They hadn't heard anything from him about it so called and eventually found out. By this time we should have been waiting for the bus and as it was pouring with rain we asked if they could give us a lift to the bus stop. Arrived and sheltered under the wooden bus shelter thinking we might have missed the bus. At 9am just about when we had given up all hope and thought it must have already passed it turned up. Got on in the rain and found our seats. A very long journey up to Jerteh, taking about 5 hours. Arrived in Jerteh and had a taxi waiting to take us to the pier in Kuala Besut. A dutch woman had now befriended us so she jumped in the taxi as well. It was then straight for the boat over to the Perhentian Islands. Had to quickly decide which island we wanted to be dropped on and where so we decided on the bigger one at a place called Abdul's as apparently if there were no rooms there then there were other places along the same beach. After a very bumpy half an hour speedboat ride we arrived at Abdul's and they had rooms available but only the more expensive huts for 2 nights until the cheap ones became free. We decided to leave our bags here and have a walk along the beach to see what else was around. After a look decided Abdul's was probably the best bet as they had the cheapest rooms once the cheap huts were free. Decided to pay the extra to stay 2 nights in the nice hut. Once we took our bags to our hut knew we wouldn't want to leave it as it was right at the front of the beach with a nice sea view. Big room with air-con and massive clean bathroom. Relaxed on the balcony with the cool sea breeze and later had something to eat at Abdul's.
Day 132 (Wednesday 16th April 08)
A nice sleep on a comfy bed with air-con! Up for some food and then sat on our balcony. Making the most of the nice sea view with the nice sea breeze as moving tomorrow to one of the back huts. Mark read his book while Em sewed some more of her flag badges onto her bag. Lots of chilling out and playing cards. Went to use the internet and found out how expensive it was! Well not expensive for back at home prices but expensive when you are used to 50p an hour. More chilling out on the balcony and playing cards. Then went for something very cheap to eat as spending out on the room. Back to play more cards and get a last good night's sleep in the comfy bed!
Day 133 (Thursday 17th April 08)
Made the most of a lie in while we were still in the nice hut. Went for something to eat and they asked if we would move into the back hut as they had someone waiting for ours. Went and moved our things and were a bit disappointed as we had got used to the nice room. Back to cold water and fan now! Too hot to sit on the balcony as no nice sea breeze here so went and sat on the beach. Lay in the sun and read our books. Mark went for a snorkel while Em sunbathed on the beach as she was a bit put off as a kid had been stung by a jellyfish earlier that day. After lots of chilling out on the beach went back to the balcony to play some cards. Had a shower and went for something to eat. Back to play yet more cards!!
Day 134 (Friday 18th April 08)
Not a very good night's sleep as our next door neighbours are very noisy and came back in the early hours of the morning banging around. Got up and walked along the beach and found a cheaper cafe so had something to eat. Mark then bought an underwater camera so he could get some pictures of the underwater world! Back to our balcony to play some backpacker then both down to the beach to have a snorkel. Em got stung a couple of times so went to lie on the beach while Mark carried on. Both chilled out on the beach. Back to our hut for a shower and then along to the cafe for something to eat again. Both had squid and chips and we very surprised to see we were each given a whole squid!
Day 135 (Saturday 19th April 08)
Another disturbed night's sleep so up and again along to the cafe for something to eat. Good cheap food here! Sunbathed on the beach and noticed some bats sleeping in the palm tree above us. Mark went and grabbed the camera and video camera to get some footage and soon everyone was interested in what was going on! More snorkeling and seeing the cute clown fish. Again more sunbathing on the hot beach, then to use Skype. To the cafe again for some food and then to sit out on our balcony.
Day 136 (Sunday 20th April 08)
Good night's sleep last night as our next door neighbours stayed in! Went for something to eat, back to play some cards on our balcony and then for another snorkel! Lost our keg tag when we were out snorkeling somewhere which was a bit annoying as no doubt we will be charged! Watched 2 lizards on the beach climbing up the tree and chasing each other. Had a nice meal at the cheap cafe again and then came back and sat at the restaurant that is part of where we are staying. Played some cards in the candlelight!
Day 137 (Monday 21st April 08)
Yet another lie in today and did pretty much the same as what we do on all the other days here! - went for something to eat at the cafe, back to sit on the balcony for a while and then moved down to the beach. Read our books and went for a snorkel. Again for a nice meal at the cafe and then to chill out on the balcony.
Day 138 (Tuesday 22nd April 08)
Woke up early to the sound of pouring rain! Had a look outside and sure enough it was pouring with rain. Tried to get back to sleep but couldn't so in the end gave up decided to go for a snorkel across the other side of the jetty whilst it was high tide. Lots of fish and the coral looking healthier this side. A very strong current so hard to swim back! Popped back to the hut and then back to the cafe for some food. Went and lay on the beach, chilled out for the rest of the day and went for another snorkel. Went and used the internet to do a few things that we needed to get done and then for something to eat.
Day 139 (Wednesday 23rd April 08)
Woke up early both feeling cold so turned off the fan and went back to sleep hearing the rain outside. Up later and went for something to eat. The weather still not great so sat on the balcony, played cards and then read books. Mark had fun filming some of the wildlife in the rain. Decided we would go for a walk along the coast to see how far we could get and what else was around so just waited for the rain to stop. Once the rain had stopped off we went and walked up over the steps and onto the other beach. From here we could see a sunk boat being towed in by 3 other boats which intrigued us! Carried on across the beach, over the headland and down onto the other beach. We asked the guys on the beach if they minded us taking photos of the sunk boat they were bringing into shore and they said that it was a police exercise and were very keen to have their photos taken! Walked on past and got some nice pictures at Shark point. Headed back as it was now threatening to rain again. Once back at Abdul's (where we are staying) carried on past to see how far we could get the other way. The answer was not very far! So headed back just as it started to rain. Had a snorkel and then went for something to eat. While we were eating it started pouring with rain so we thought we were going to get soaked walking back but very kindly they let us borrow an umberella so we kept dry! We were sat out on the balcony and we kept hearing noises like someone was walking around in one of the huts next to us which was really strange as nearly everyone except us had left today. In the end went and asked if there was anyone in the next room and they checked and wasn't anyone. Very strange!
Day 140 (Thursday 24th April 08)
Up early as Em was still a bit freaked out from the noises we had heard the night before. Read our books and then went for something to eat. Took the umberella back even though still raining! Used the internet and found out that Hector not very well, so Em a bit upset. Mark suggested playing backpacker to try and take Em's mind off it. Decided to book the boat for tomorrow back to the mainland as still raining! The guy at the cafe had told us that it is normally like this at the end of April and rains for about a week so decided there was no point us hanging around! Stayed in the hut for the rest of the day and sorted out bags out for leaving the next day. Had some really nice food in the evening at Abdul's. Decided to treat ourselves to a BBQ as it was our last night. Mark had a blue crab which was really tasty and Em had some mackeral which was really good!
