Day 127 (Friday 11th April 08)
A very early start to have some breakfast before catching a minibus to where the bus left for Taman Negara. Only 4 other people on the bus! Slow bus journey as lots of steep hills to climb. Stopped in a service station half way and watched a cat eat some crisps one of the other couples gave it. Arrived in Jerantut around 12ish and organised with the travel agent where we wanted to go after the Taman Negara and how we were going to get there. Left our bags and found out where the bank was and went for a walk to get some more money out. Came back and had some lunch and left on a minibus for a half an hour drive to the pier. From their we all got on a small wooden boat where we were sat on the floor with cushions. Soon realised that it was going to be an uncomfortable 3 hour journey! Hoping that the crocodiles won't get us! After lovely jungle scenery and a few stops and the guy having to sort out the engine we arrived at the Taman Negara. Had to lug our bags quite a way and up a very steep hill and found somewhere to stay. Soon found out that our balcony door didn't lock on our door so moved rooms. Popped across to use the internet, booked our jungle trek and had some food. Em's vegetable curry was very spicy! Then off to bed after a long day of travelling.
Day 128 (Saturday 12th April 08)
Another early start to go and get our passes for the Taman Negara then back up the hill to have breakfast and wait for the guide to pick us up. Our guide took us back down to the river side onto a different floating restaurant and we were put with a group of locals. All into a boat and dropped across the otherside of the river further along. It was very hot and humid in the jungle!! Started our long trek up to the Teresk Hill. Decided to hang to the back of the group and hope that the guide at the back would tell us things along the way. Soon found out that he preferred taking westerners to locals as they were more interested in what he has to say. He said that they had asked the others if they wanted to split the group into two as there were two guides and then everyone could hear about the different things in the jungle but they weren't interested. It was good for us as we got a personal guide! Heard about lots of the interesting things in the jungle as well as about a race that he does every year. They all race up to the highest point in the Taman Negara which would normally take 4 days up and 3 days back but he had done it in 27 hours. The winner had completed it in 24 hours so he was hoping to make it in 25 hours this year. Once we reached the top it was an amazing view. Took some pictures and then it was for the trek back down. Another boat trip back and straight for some food as both very hungry! Then back to book the night safari and for a much needed shower. Had a sleep as knew we would have to be up early the next morning too. Up again and down for some food and waited to be picked up for the night safari. As we were the last ones to be picked up we got the comfy seats in the back of the truck as everywhere else was already full. Saw a monkey, birds, snakes and a house cat! Very interesting and exciting waiting for an animal sighting. It was then back to bed.
