There were a lot of empty seats on the bus this morning, some people must have had a bit too much to drink... We spent the morning in the ob/gyn ward watching the nurse vaccinate the babies and take blood tests. Then we spent some time holding the babies who's mothers we unable to be with their babies for various reasons, either due to recovery or the mothers had been discharged from the hospital but the babies needed more care. Our doctor then told us that there was a scheduled cesarean section happening right them so we walked to the OR and scrubbed up only to find that we were literally 2 minutes late, the baby was being wrapped up and the mother was being stitched back up so that was a bit disappointing that we missed it but I think that holding the babies was worth it. After lunch went back to the ob/gyn ward to find our doctor but she never came so we asked one of the nurses to show us around the neonatal ICU ward and pediatric ward. Here we saw all of the teenie tiny premature babies. I couldn't imagine holding a premature baby, they're so small and delicate but so perfect. It's so hard to believe that they are just a smaller version of me, living and breathing and functioning the same way that I am in those tiny bodies of theirs. Then we went to the pediatric ICU ward which I thought was really sad because we saw so many sick little children lying in hospital beds when try should be outside playing. But there was a happy moment when a mother was finally allowed to take home her child after months of him being on a respirator. The smile on her face made my day, she was so happy to bring her baby home.
