dzasta travels
I left the hostel in Tel Aviv early this morning. I couldn't sleep cos the African who came in early this morning, and turned on the aricon, started snoring. I couldn't sleep so I got up and looked for a place to stay in Jerusalem. I found the bus station pretty easdly and the process was simple. Pay the driver as you get on. 19NIS for the trip, it is like $6for Perth to Northam? I am on the Egged bus. I don't know why but that is what they call them.
I am staying inside the old city, just inside the Jaffa gate. Called the Jaffa gate cos it is the road to Jaffa. When I got here I met my new best friend. An Armenian bloke called John. He sells all kind of rubbish and does tours to all parts of Israel. After I checked in he found me trying to sneek out and I went to his shop to drink tea and haggle. He offered me a tour for 4 days for 8000NIS. That is about $2100. I told him he was dreaming cos I can get the tour for 1000NIS. The tea was good and we departed friends with no sale.
I couldn't get into my room so I did a FREE walking tour. The tour was free for a reason. They advertised all their other tours and was a bit short on substance. I took some random photos and I will go back and show you the place later. In the meantime here are just some random snaps that you might or might not recognize.
Jerusalem is EXACTLY like I expected. Chaotic small lanes and markets and tunnels and every religion you might imagine here.
This arvo I went for a walk. I went up to the new town to do some business and have a quick look. Jaffa rd is a mall. I walked about 2km along it with no cars at all. There is a tram down the centre but no cars at all. I thought it seemed quiet and a lot of the shops are closed. It turns out it is sabbath so lots are closed.
I thought I would fill in time and go to the western wall to check it out up close. Well it should be a straight line from my hostel but I got lost. I ended up at the Damascus gate that gave me another reference point to try again. I got lost. I found myself on the Via Dolorosa. This is supposedly the route Jesus took carrying the cross to his crucifixion. Heaps of nutbags come and do it all the time now and you can hire crosses for it. I was following the signs for the 13 'stations'. There is a plaque at each of the stations to tell the story. I should have written them down but some are, where Jesus fell down the first time, (I don't know how they know the exact spot) where a lady wiped his face (again I don't know how they know the spot) where he fell over second time etc. Anyway I missed some of the signs and I got lost. I did find a cool Russian church that is partly excavated and part museum. They I thought I would go to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre since I was near by and I errrr got lost. I can see the Dome of the Rock from my dunny window and the Al-Aqsa Mosque from my balcony but I couldn't get to them today. I will try again tomorrow. I headed home and believe it or not I came out on the same road I went in on after being lost for 2 hours. I probably just walked around in circles.
