The Castaways
So we arrived in Kanchanaburi after a short and sweet 2 hour bus trip from Bangkok. We ended up in the non tourist part of town purely because it was near the bus station but it's not too bad because we were intending on chilling out anyway. We found a guesthouse - which is actually a raft on the river, which you can feel swaying! It is really nice and friendly with English speaking owners. We had planned a few things we wanted to do here and went on a day tour of all the sights in one. We started off with Erawen waterfalls - which is a 7 tier waterfall. It's a national park but you wouldnt know it as there wasn't any real steps or path up the waterfalls, you literally had to climb all these muddy rocks (as it was raining) to get to the top which took at least an hour and 1/2. It was really beautiful and Matthew swam (when Dulcie went to go in we realised we were too late) but then we did the elephant riding and bamboo rafting again as it was only a little extra and it was fun last time. It really was more organised then the trip in Chiang Mai and way safer. We actually had seat belts on the elephant ride and there was a set path for the elephants to follow. We even headed down to the river where the elephants went in for a bit. But we did see 2 crocodiles on the other side. Not that great as when we came to go on the bamboo raft, we happened to pass the same part of the river and seriously a piece of bamboo isn't going to stop a hungry croc!! After this we went to the Death Railway (the whole P.O.W's during WWII railway where loads died etc) and then headed to the Bridge over the River Kwai, the other part of the railway where the film was made about it. And we also got to ride on the railway. Very tiring day but worthwhile and will be heading on for some more adventures tomorrow.
