Day 12. Continued north along the Goldfields Highway to Wiluna, a small town on the edge of the Gibson Desert and Little Sandy Desert. Very dry here, red soil and scrubby stony desert landscapes. We passed many mine sites evident by the huge tailing hills and signs with locked gates. Stopped at the shady BHP village of Leinster which services the large nickel mine. Day 11. Continuing north up the Goldfields Highway from Kalgoorlie our first stop today is Menzies an old gold mining town. In the 1890s Menzies had a population over 5,000 but alas now less than 50. Some interesting old buildings such as the Town Hall which went without a town clock for 100 years, old hotels and railway station. Great coffees from Mahalia Coffee in Robe at the cafe! Day 10. Today we are checking out the mining operations, back streets and old heritage buildings of Kalgoorlie and Boulder. A walk down the beautiful old Main Street of Boulder and into the grand Town Hall to view the council chambers with its polished karri and jarrah floors, a very interesting war museum and finally coffees at a beaut local cafe. A short drive up to the Super Pit on the Golden Mile, a massive open cut gold mine being the largest in the world....

Day 9. A strange fog over Fraser Range Station early this morning. Emus, camels, kangaroos, old stone buildings and old cars, very rustic. On the road again, through the vast Western Hardwood Forest, largest in the world, we arrive into Norseman an old gold mining town for fuel. Days 7 & 8. Two very long days crossing the Nullarbor Plain from Ceduna towards Norseman WA. A detour into Fowlers Bay to walk on the very long jetty, whales spouting in the distance. Huge sandhills behind the village, this is where explorer Eyre started his epic journey across the flat Nullarbor in the 1860s.
