Day 11. Continuing north up the Goldfields Highway from Kalgoorlie our first stop today is Menzies an old gold mining town. In the 1890s Menzies had a population over 5,000 but alas now less than 50. Some interesting old buildings such as the Town Hall which went without a town clock for 100 years, old hotels and railway station. Great coffees from Mahalia Coffee in Robe at the cafe! Waiting for a long ore train to pass through the Station, we chatted to some fluoro vested workers from Downer who were doing track maintenance with two huge track machines. Back on the road again we passed many large mine tailing sites and arrived into Leonora at midday. But first a visit to the Ghost Town of Gwalia and Museum with its huge open cut gold mine called Sons of Gwalia named after Welsh heritage. A walk through Hubert Hoover’s house circa 1898, now a fabulous B&B overlooking the deep open pit. Lots of old tin shacks in the ghost town built by the Italian and Yugoslav miners. Into Leonora a real outback town with about 500 rugged individuals, dinner tonight at the local pub. More skimpies at the White Horse Hotel. They seem to be everywhere in outback WA! Distance today 260km, warm 24 degrees, shorts tomorrow.
