Day 9. A strange fog over Fraser Range Station early this morning. Emus, camels, kangaroos, old stone buildings and old cars, very rustic. On the road again, through the vast Western Hardwood Forest, largest in the world, we arrive into Norseman an old gold mining town for fuel. A quick visit to the local hospital down near the salt lake and landing strip, Ross had his stitches checked by a nurse and all ok. She called out to the ‘two old men’ , such rudeness! But we are now in the outback of WA! Turning north we head up the Goldfields Highway passing Lake Cowan and other large salt lakes. Many roads lead off the highway to gold mines and even one to rare caesium deposits. Arriving into Kalgoorlie and twin Boulder, population over 30,000, we are in our first large city since leaving Canberra. Checked into our motel for the next 2 nights and starting planning for our road trip wild north over the next week. Dinner tonight at the heritage Exchange Hotel, a few beautiful young ’skimpies’ pouring beers in the front bar but we did not stay, wisely! Distance today 300km, fine and mild 18 degrees.
