Day 21. Up early again and down to the marina as we are going fishing out into the Exmouth Gulf on a small charter boat with Jay our skipper and 6 other fisher hopefuls. Fast boat trip out into the Indian Ocean leaving the tip of the North West Cape far behind with a distant view of Vlamming Lighthouse and Ningaloo Reef. Slow bottom fishing at first but Jay skilfully moved the boat to several drop off locations and then the fish were on! Big giant trevally, red emperor, golden band snapper, cod and many other species. Not really sport fishing when you drop a heavy handline with a very heavy lead sinker from a massive fixed reel to a depth of 100metres, and then you can hardly feel the fish bite and then a long wind up to the surface. So many tangles even the skipper was mystified. A couple of us had a bout of sea sickness, not pleasant, especially when Ross had a sudden urge to rush to the back of the boat and vomited all over a lady’s leg and the inside of the boat. She was very understanding and later said ‘not an attractive way to pick up a chick’. Whales came very close to the boat and kept us alert between fish hook ups. Back in the harbour 8 hours later we filleted the fish and said our farewells. Dinner tonight guess what, fish on the bbq wrapped in foil. Delicious! Warm today 29 degrees and rain coming tomorrow so we are moving on south.
