Day 20. Up early as we are going fishing from the beach at Ningaloo Reef. Beautiful sunrise as we pass by the 13 huge communications aerials from a time when they used to talk to submarines. Who knows who they are talking to now? Up to Vlaming Head lighthouse for a fabulous view of the Exmouth Gulf and the world heritage Ningaloo Reef. Whales frolicking in the blue water. Then we found a nice little beach to cast our lines out into the surf. Paul caught 2 rock cod and lost 3 rigs and a soft plastic lure through snags on the reef. We were warned by Steve at the local tackle shop that the beaches have many hidden coral outcrops and rocky ledges, he does a very good business at selling tackle! Tried another beach with more sand and had a few strikes. Decided to proceed 50km down the reef to Yardie Creek for lunch on the picnic tables. Walked into the beautiful gorge a short way then we drove to some white sandy beaches for a swim. First stop Sandy Bay for a delightful swim and snorkel, and then onto beautiful Torquoise Bay for a drift snorkel, beautiful brown coral close to shore with so many colourful fish species. We were amazed at the Bondi Beach crowd on this beautiful remote beach, many who were skimpy back packers. Water temperature about 24 degrees. Back near the top of the Gulf we fished a beautiful rock platform where Ross caught a rock cod and the other fish ate all our bait! After refreshing showers we walked up to the town centre for a beer at the local pub and fish and chips at the local take away - goldband snapper and Spanish mackerel. Distance today 110km, hot 30 degrees.
