Day 22. Heading south today to Carnarvon which sits just above the Tropic of Capricorn. Carnarvon is the food bowl of Western Australia on the mighty but dry Gascoyne River which flows 600 km into the Indian Ocean. A short detour into Coral Bay for a stroll on the white sand beach with its turquoise water. So many caravans filling the 3 van parks, what do all these hundreds of grey nomads do all day as none on the beach! Pasties and coffees at the local bakery and then we drove down to the boat harbour. Back on the highway we are now on our way to Carnarvon arriving mid afternoon. Through the riverside farms we notice tomatoes, egg plants, chillies beans, mangoes, bananas, paw paw, growing on the rich alluvial soil. A short drive out to the old jetty the longest in WA we are disappointed that someone has burnt down a middle section and it is now closed. The council needs $43million to completely rebuild! Lucky we caught the little train out to the end of the jetty 4 years ago! We are staying in a container donga tonight in the Coral Coast Tourist Park, completely modernised with 2 beds, air conditioning, big fridge, kitchenette and tv. Hope they don’t ship us out overnight! Dinner tonight at the Port Hotel, steaks with a schooner on special. Distance today 400km, warm 24 degrees. A little rain early this morning. Tomorrow we are going a little north 83km to Quobber Station for 3 nights so we may be out of range. Fishing is on the agenda and a few campfires.

Cathy Robo Enjoying your trip Paul and the amazing places, including tour of the open cut mine. Another use for a retired shipping container!
