Day 19. Chatting to our new road train driver mates in Onslow, we head off down the highway on our way to Exmouth. Past the vast spinifex anthill colony and the white salt pans, we turn once again onto the Coastal Highway and head south west through the beautiful red mountainous Cane River Conservation Park and past Nanutarra Roadhouse. We cross numerous huge red sand hills and then turn north towards Exmouth Gulf. We pass the Learmonth RAAF runways and airport and turn off onto a dirt track to the beach to walk on a small jetty out onto the vast blue Gulf, a whale splashing about in the distance. A 20km detour sees us enter the gorges of Cape Range National Park, from the top of course, very impressive limestone cliffs and deep gorges. Arriving into small town of Exmouth mid afternoon we check out the boat harbour and expensive houses on the marina. We are staying for 3 nights at the Potshot Hotel where Ross tells me he first had a beer at the front bar 50 years ago! Much rougher place then! Dinner tonight bbq steak, potatoes and salad which we cook at the fabulous camp kitchen at our hotel. We are finally going on a small fishing charter in a couple of days. Distance today 450km, warm 27 degrees.
