Hey everyone
Loving it here in Sihanoukville! We've had a very very relaxing...errr...2 weeks i think weve been here...or a week and a half. God knows! I dont even know what day of the week it is half of the time ! Its irrelevant hehe
First we spent a week on Occheuteal Beach. It was quite busy here but not too busy like most of Thailands beaches. The sands so white and the waters lovely.
The first day we were there we were approached by an American girl selling tickets for a boat trip.. 5 dollars to visit two islands so we bought some. Most places sell them for 15dollars all food and drink included so this was cheaper (and we only eneded up spending about 5 doillars each on there anyway!)
The boat was quite big and ther was a monkey on there which Dom was so close to stealing and bringing home with him!
We spent about an hour maybe 2 hours at each island . Dom made me (yes MADE me) jump off the boat into the sea.. hes so mean! it was great ..you could go snorkelling or fishing or sunbathe on the island.
The islands are so peacful ! There is one guesthouse on each island and thats it.
We had bbq and sticky rice for lunch and finally arrived back on the beach at 5pm just in time for sunset.
The next day it rained all morning ! So we went on the internet and booked some flights.
We fly to Bangkok from Vietnam on 13th March (40pounds for us both!) and from Singapore to Darwin on 7th May (140pounds for us both!)
The rain was so heavy it was scary. But he sun came out in the afternoon and it was soon too hot again!
There are loads of bars on the beach, each bar has sunbeds outside which you can use for free if you buy food and drink. We felt like royalty. The staf just keep checking on you (obviously wanting you to constantly order) but it was great as we didnt have to lift a finger. They just bring you beer over and serve you your food at your sunbed !
The evenings are good at this beach as there are quite a few restaurants to chose from. Most of them serve bbq for as cheap as 2pounds!! You can chose jacket potato/chips/rice so Dom and I had BBQ chicken and jacket potato (also cooked on the bbq) with salad most nights, (Dom sometimes got the Baracuda) Aw its making my mouth water now thinking about it ! Yum yum
Anwyay enough about food.... We bumped into our Dutch friends, Joris and Robert and also saw John again.
We decided to move from this beach though, because there are SO MANY hawkers!!! The best way to deal with them is a polite but firm "no"..however, it took us a while to realise this.
Oh and you should never say to them "maybe later" as they think this means DEFINATELY later...
Dont smile and joke with them too much or else they will sit with you playing on your ipod for half an hour (this happened to me..)
Dom and I are too polite though . We made so many friends. One little girl was called Kim and she walked along the beach every day after school selling fruit (balancing on her head) She was adorable and almost cried (honestly, her eyes started welling up) when i said i dint want any fruit!! So of course i ended up buying some .... to be fair to her it was good fruit !!!
Every day after this she came and sat next to me on my sunbed. She didnt say much.. She just like siting there with us... sometimes there was an awkward silence when i didnt know what more i could ask her !
I found out that she went to school every day from 8am until 11am then came to sell fruit on the beach. She told me that the money she makes goes towards her schooling fees.
Dom made some friends too. A young lad made us bracelets for free but obviously wanted us to buy something from him every day after that ! And he would playfully punch Dom in the arm if he said he didnt want anything (charming)
They sell EVERYTHING on the beach... sunglasses, fruit, lobstor, bracelets, books! We were forever saying "no thank you"
The children are funny. Theyre really outgoing and seem so grown up ! Three little girls sat on my bed one day and started talking to me. When they saw my Ipod they asked if i had 'Rhianna' on there! So i stook 'Umberella' on repeat for them all and they all started singing along.. Then the eldest of the three started playing on one of the games on there. She got very comfortable leaning against me (almost laying on me)
She was sat there for half an hour i thought she'd never leave !
In the end we decided it was time for a change and we'd heard that Otres beach (about a ten minute drive on the back of a moto....aka moped) was meant to be really nice.
We found a nice room which was abve a restaurant (shared bathroom, cold water) it was like being in the loft. But the bed didnt smell very clean to me... and we were geting buten by mosquitos so we decided to look for somewhere else.
Further up the beach we found an eight dollar room which was literally on the beach . It had its own bathroom and was so much more clean!
We spent three days here (first day it rained so we treat ourselves to a hot chocolate!!!)
But the weatehr since has been bloody gorgeous..too hot almost ! So weve been topping up our tans. We have literaly done nothing for ages and its been awesome!
Otres beach was so quiet ... paradise ! But the nights were a litle boring as there was nowhere to go for a few drinks and some places stopped serving food at 5pm! Were back on Occheuteal beach now and heading to a little Fishing Town named Kampot tomorrow. Our Vietnam Visa starts on Wednesday so we can go there anytime after that....
